I'm ready for opening day; Mark Rzepczynski is not. He tried to bare-hand a ball hit up the middle by Ramiro Pena and fractured the middle finger on his pitching hand. According to Cito, he'll be out for up to six weeks.
One man's misfortune is another man's fortune: this injury will shake up the opening day starting rotation. Who will be the beneficiary? My bet is Brett Cecil, who's had a good spring after recovering from a kitchen-knife accident. Dana Eveland has also been mentioned as a possible replacement, but Cecil has more upside and that's what this year is all about, right? Here's my projected opening day starting rotation:
1. Shaun Marcum
2. Ricky Romero
3. Brandon Morrow (I think he'll be ready)
4. Brett Cecil
5. Brian Tallet
Maybe the Jays are just getting all of their bad karma out of the way now before the season starts.
Another piece of interesting news: Raul Chavez has been sent down to the minors, which means that we will have a new catcher and back-up catcher to open the season. The back-up will be one of the Molinas (Jose I believe).
Also, today was an important day considering that it's still spring training. The Jays had their first encounter with Roy Halladay... in the opponents' dugout. Seems like they remembered some of his tricks, tagging him for 4 earned runs over 3 IP. Aaron Hill hit a two run homer! This man is having a great spring.
